Tackle is personal, so picking a rod, reel or lure for someone else is a gamble. Apparel is easier: it doesn't have to match his setup, only how he fishes and what he likes to wear. Here's how to choose one he'll actually put on.

Start with how he fishes

A few questions narrow it down quickly:

  • Where does he fish? A man who chases largemouth on a reservoir and one who wades a smallmouth river will both say “bass,” but they picture different water. Pick a design that speaks to his kind of fishing.
  • When does he fish? If he's out before sunrise and back after dark, something comfortable for the drive and the ramp gets more wear than something for the middle of the day.
  • Does he wear his hobby? Some anglers want a big, bold design; others prefer something quieter they can wear anywhere. Look at what he already wears on weekends.

If he spends long days in full sun, a shirt with a tested UPF rating is the right tool for that job, and a heavyweight cotton tee is the one for everything around it. We explain the difference in What Makes a Good Fishing Shirt.

Getting the size right

The easiest way to get it right is to borrow a T-shirt he likes the fit of. Lay it flat and measure straight across, one inch below the armpits, then from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem. Compare those numbers with the measurements on the product page or our size guide.

Our Comfort Colors tees are the 1717, which Comfort Colors describes as a relaxed-fit tee, pre-shrunk during the garment-dye and wash process for almost no shrinkage at home. Between two sizes, size up for a relaxed fit. Because every piece is printed to order, we can't accept returns for size or preference.

Ordering in time for Father's Day

In the United States, Father's Day is set by federal law as the third Sunday in June. Every American Lunker piece is printed after it's ordered, so allow for production as well as shipping. Printed to order in 2–5 business days, then 3–5 business days in transit. Those are estimates, not guaranteed dates, so give yourself a cushion — especially around holidays. Standard US shipping is a flat $3.99 per order. Orders of $50.00 or more (after discounts) ship free.

Gift ideas under $50

These pieces start under $50, at today's prices in the shop. Prices can differ by size, so check the size you need on the product page.

For more ideas, see our fishing gifts. If he'd wear the brand, the American Lunker Vintage Bass Tee carries the name; if he'd rather be on the water than anywhere else, the “I would rather be fishing” shirt says it for him.

If something isn't right

If it arrives misprinted, damaged or defective, tell us within 30 days of delivery with a photo and we'll send a replacement or refund you. The details are in our returns policy. To keep the gift looking good, pass along our guide on how to care for a fishing T-shirt.
